The situation is… deplorable!

South Sudan has one of the lowest literacy rates on Earth.

TWO THIRDS of South Sudan’s people cannot read, write or do simple arithmetic.

The Challenges:

  • One of the world’s poorest nations
  • Widespread poverty: Over half the food is provided by humanitarian agencies
  • Years of conflict devastated much of the country, including the education sector
  • Damaging Societal Norms: Early marriage (including forced marriages) and polygamy are common. Most young women have five or more children, and most men have two to six wives that they may not support at all.
  • Teacher Shortages, Lack of Training
