History of Grassroot Initiative Network

The Grassroots Initiative Network (GIN) is a community-driven nonprofit organization committed to providing basic literacy education to underserved populations in Ulang County, South Sudan. Ulang County is in the eastern part of Upper Nile State in South Sudan. It's situated along the River Sobat.

Founded in 2022, GIN works to bridge the educational gap for vulnerable groups, particularly 12 years and over, young adults, and women, who lack access to formal education due to geographic and socio-economic barriers. Through grassroots initiatives, GIN empowers local communities by providing the necessary resources, support, and education to help improve their quality of life and reduce poverty. GIN's core programs include offering literacy and basic education to children of 12 years and over and young adults with educational resources and support for the continued education of young girls. The organization also addresses health and hygiene needs by distributing hygiene kits to students and fostering an environment conducive to learning.

With a small but dedicated team of volunteer teachers, GIN collaborates with local schools, educators, and community members to promote educational development and create sustainable change. GIN is organized as two registered nongovernmental organizations (one in South Sudan and one in Michigan) but operates with collaboration between the Boards of Directors in each nation. Five volunteer teachers in South Sudan, and more other volunteers in South Sudan and the U.S. If you are interested in helping us, make a difference by making a monetary donation, please know that your tax-deductible gift will be used to create a bright and self-sustaining future for many lives.
